
Lois L. LaRue, “The Pony Lady,” 97 of Scribner passed peacefully Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at home, surrounded by family and friends. She was born January 10, 1929 outside Kilduff, Iowa, to Donald and Dorothy (Taylor) Frey.
The family originally of Newton, Iowa, moved, first to California when she was a child, then across the Midwest throughout her school years.
On June 29, 1946 Lois married Roy Peterson, together they had four sons and three daughters.
On December 20, 1974, she married Danny LaRue, and had one daughter.
Lois worked a variety of jobs in her lifetime, finding a way to touch people’s lives wherever she worked or lived, whether helping on the farm or taking care of the elderly. She and her husband Danny were the proud owners of Chambers Farm & Ranch Supply, and in later years, founded LaRue’s Little Horse Ranch, pony ride and petting zoo. They continued this business with the help of family and friends, for over 35 years. Lois’s life was spent sharing her faith, and love of people and animals with future generations.
Lois was preceded in death by; her father, Donald Frey; mother, Dorothy Astelle; “Papa” Kay Astelle; grandparents Clarence and Edna Taylor; husband Roy Peterson; husband Danny LaRue; beloved in laws, and her precious grand babies.
Those left behind to honor her memory are; sons, Phillip (Nancy) Peterson of Blair; Mark Peterson of Fremont; Kevin (Kathi) Peterson of Omaha; and Shannon (Lori) Peterson of Fremont; daughters, Deneille Chamley (Scott Ahl) of Lavista; Yolonda (Carl) Cease of Scribner; Deidre (Rob) Herpel of Lonoke, Arkansas; Darla (Jason) Garretson of Scribner; brothers, Stanley (Janet) Astelle of Grinnell, Iowa; Darrell (Candy) Astelle of Waterloo, Iowa; cousin Patty Stickfort of Marshalltown, Iowa; 41 grandchildren; 92 great grandchildren; 57 great great grandchildren; and many other treasured family members and friends.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 1, 2026 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at Reach Church.
The Wind Song Service for Lois will be Monday, February 2, 2026 at Reach Church in Blair.
Burial will take place at the Herman Cemetery following the service.
