Fremont Area Habitat for Humanity observed a milestone Friday morning breaking ground on its 100th home.

The groundbreaking coincided with a Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce coffee at the home’s location, 503 North L Street.

Councilman Jeff Peterson was one of the speakers at the event. He praised executive director Joy McKay and her team for their impact in the community.

“I can’t even tell you how impressed and excited I am and what an honor it is to be here,” he said. “This is going to be a town home so it is family No. 100 and No. 101 so Joy you and your team are changing the demographic of Fremont one family at a time. … Home ownership is the foundation of our country — that is wonderful. Joy, you and your team are making it happen.”

McKay addressed the crowd and noted that 100 homes also means 100 personal stories connected to them.

“So the partnership and hard work both come together to make something possible that none of us could do on our own,” she said. “So our mission of seeking to put God’s love into action has brought people in our community together and I am so grateful for that. None of it happens without you guys. We’re thankful to God, of course, our volunteers, our donors, our business partners, our groundbreakers and supporters. This milestone belongs to all of you as much as it belongs to us.”

Habitat Board President Ashley Fowler also thanked the many people that helped achieve the milestone. She said she is excited about the organization’s future and encouraged others to get involved.

“So here is the best part,” she said, “I said that I’m excited for the future. We’re not quite ready to share all of the details yet, but as a board we’ve been working behind the scenes on something really big and it is going to take the support of all of you. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved or more involved, I’d encourage you to say ‘yes’ when that opportunity comes. I truly believe the best is still ahead.”
