Public meeting set to address flooding concerns

city-of-fremont

Dodge County and the City of Fremont, in collaboration with the Dodge County Joint Water Management Advisory Board (JWMAB), will hold a public meeting to present proposed project alternatives to address flooding problems.

The meeting, scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 30 at the Johnson Crossing Academic Center, will focus on the southeast section of Fremont and surrounding agricultural and rural areas within Elkhorn Township.

All are welcome to attend. There will be no formal presentation and residents are invited to come and go at their convenience.

Dodge County, the City of Fremont, and the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District are partnering to develop the Dodge County Elkhorn Township Drainage Improvement Plan. The drainage improvement plan will assess Fremont’s internal drainage needs and examine the out-letting drainage ditch system in the Elkhorn Township area east of Fremont.

In addition, the plan will serve as the cornerstone of an application for Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) grant funding that will be sought to help cover the cost of needed drainage improvements. During the public meeting, attendees will be able to learn more from project personnel, as well as ask questions and provide feedback.

Catastrophic flooding occurred in March 2019 along the Platte and Elkhorn Rivers and their tributaries, affecting the communities of North Bend, Fremont, and Inglewood. The Dodge County JWMAB was created to support inter-agency collaborative efforts to identify and implement measures to reduce area flood risks.

Current planning efforts started in the summer of 2021. Public input is very important to the project team. Any written comments or requests regarding the project should be submitted to Kevin Kruse with JEO at kkruse@jeo.com, 402.474.8759, or mailed directly to the JEO Lincoln office at 2000 Q Street Ste. 500, Lincoln, NE 68503.
