BSB: Late-Inning Heartbreaker Sinks Warriors in Doubleheader to Northwestern

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University hosted a doubleheader against Northwestern College to wrap up the four-game series on a cold, windy Friday afternoon for Alumni Day. The Warriors fell in Game 1, 14-6, and suffered a heartbreaker in Game 2, 22-17.

GAME ONE: Northwestern 14, Midland 6

The Warriors got on the board first as Jimmy Martinez drew a two-out walk before Owen Glover homered to right field. Hunter Spencer followed with a solo home run to give Midland a 3-0 lead.

Northwestern took the lead with two six-run innings in the second and third to make it 12-3.

J. Martinez singled to center field, and Aidan Smith followed with a single to left-center to bring him home and make it 12-4 at the end of the third inning.

The Red Raiders added another run in the fourth with a double to extend the lead to 13-4.

A two-out single by Hunter Spencer put him aboard before Smith doubled to left field to drive him in, cutting the deficit to 13-5.

Northwestern added a solo home run in the top of the seventh to make it 14-5.

Midland continued to fight as Anthony Martinez doubled down the right-field line. Glover added a sacrifice fly to drive him in, but Northwestern recorded the final out to hand the Warriors a 14-6 loss in Game 1.

GAME TWO: Northwestern 22, Midland 17

After a scoreless first inning, the Red Raiders took an early 5-0 lead with five runs on four hits.

Jax Sorensen responded in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left field to make it 5-1.

A leadoff home run and a double extended Northwestern’s lead to 7-1 in the top of the third.

A one-out single by Jimmy Martinez put him aboard before Hunter Spencer drew a walk. Adam Muniz Jr. doubled to left-center to drive in Glover and Spencer, cutting the deficit to 7-3 at the end of the third.

Another two-run home run by Northwestern pushed the lead to 9-3 in the fourth.

Aidan Smith pinch-hit and doubled to right-center, and Jesse Chimenti entered as a courtesy runner. Sorensen singled to put runners aboard. Back-to-back singles by Brody Boyle and Anthony Martinez scored Sorensen and Chimenti. Another single by Owen Glover brought in Boyle as the Warriors cut the deficit to 9-6 at the end of the fourth.

Northwestern added a solo home run in the fifth to make it 10-6.

Muniz Jr. led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to spark Midland’s offense. Eimir Perez Jr. drew a walk as a pinch hitter, and Chase Bouges entered as a courtesy runner. Sotere Ureno doubled down the left-field line, and a flyout scored Bouges. Boyle doubled to bring in Chimenti and advanced to third on an error before Anthony Martinezsingled to score him. J. Martinez and Glover followed with back-to-back singles to bring home A. Martinez. Muniz Jr. capped the inning with a three-run home run to make it 14-10.

The Red Raiders added another solo home run in the sixth to make it 14-11.

Midland’s momentum continued as Ureno led off with a single and Sorensen drew a walk. A. Martinez doubled to bring home Chimenti. A flyout by J. Martinez scored Sorensen, and Glover singled to bring home A. Martinez to extend the lead to 17-11.

Northwestern responded with four runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 17-15.

The Red Raiders regained the lead in the top of the ninth with two three-run home runs, scoring six runs on four hits to make it 22-17.

The Warriors continued to battle as Spencer and Muniz Jr. opened the inning with back-to-back singles, but Northwestern recorded the final two outs to secure the win.

Midland (12-32, 7-17 GPAC) will have a week break after playing 12 games in an 11-day span due to weather-related schedule changes. The Warriors will host Briar Cliff University (20-21, 13-9 GPAC) in a doubleheader to begin the final four-game series of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, April 24, for Senior Day at Moller Field in Fremont, Nebraska.
