Fremont High School’s list of Nebraska Gatorade Players of the Year grew by one on Wednesday.
Senior Taylor McCabe was named the 2021-22 recipient for girls basketball. The University of Iowa signee is averaging 21.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.7 steals and 1 block per game through 27 games.
The state’s career three-point leader, she also holds the Class A scoring record with 2,273 entering tonight’s Class A state semifinal game against Lincoln High.
McCabe is the second FHS athlete to win a Gatorade award this school year. Elli Dahl was honored for girls cross country in January.
McCabe is the first FHS player to win the girls basketball award since Rylie Cascio Jensen captured it in 2016. Jessica Shepard of the Tigers was honored in 2014 and also earned it in 2013 as a sophomore at Lincoln Southeast.
Mitchell Hahn, who went on to play for the University of Nebraska Omaha, won the Gatorade honor for boys basketball during his senior season of 2014 with the Tigers.
Jon Ronhovde of FHS was the boys cross country winner in 2008 while Mitch Hunt captured the boys track award in 2009.
