“It is imperative that we all continue to do our part through this latest surge of COVID-19 cases, ” said Terra Uhing, executive director of Three Rivers. “Please stay home if you are sick, get vaccinated and wear a mask when out in the community to help us preserve our medical capacity.”
Amy Roberts, a Three Rivers disease surveillance coordinator, said COVID-19 isn’t the only illness creating problems this winter.
“Of course with Covid, we kind of forget about some of the other illnesses that are circulating, and unlike last year when flu really wasn’t a concern this year we are seeing flu cases with some of the lessened precautions,” she said. “In December we saw 100 lab-confirmed cases of flu (type) A so far this month in our jurisdiction we have had 82. We want people to know flu is circulating and so that is also a concern.”
While symptoms of the flu and COVID-19 can mimic each other, Roberts said there is a good way to tell the difference.
“The main way would be through testing,” she said. “They are similar, of course, but if you are having symptoms it is a good idea at this time of year to be tested for both. That would be only way to know for sure.”
