Spellerberg receives Global Statesman Award

The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition recognized Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg recently with the Global Statesman Award, but he prefers to think of it as an honor for the city.

“I think it is more a recognition for the city and the great things going on here,” Spellerberg said. “It is a team effort and I’m just a small part of that. I just think it is great for our community to be recognized. These things are nice, but as mayor I just want to do whatever we can to make Fremont the best place possible.”

USGLC honored several mayors from across the United States for their leadership.

Liz Schrayer, president and CEO of the USGLC, said in a press release that Spellerberg was recognized for his leadership on why leading globally matters locally.

“USGLC is proud to honor Mayor Spellerberg because he has been an influential advocate for strengthening American global leadership to support our communities here at home,” Schrayer said.

On Sept. 28, the mayor issued a proclamation declaring the day U.S. Heartland Global Leadership Day. The proclamation showcased the state’s agricultural exports contributing to America’s global effort to fight hunger and poverty as well as supporting jobs. It also highlighted the state’s higher-learning institutions, including Midland University, for enrolling more than 5,000 international students per year and its economic impact.

In a letter to Spellerberg dated Oct. 1, Schrayer said, “Your proclamation was inspiring, not only showcasing the success of your city, but to demonstrate to your constituents that engaging globally matters to their everyday lives. Like you, we have seen the enhanced role mayors are playing across the country as true international leaders.”

Spellerberg said he was pleased to be considered part of that mayoral group.

“It was an honor to be recognized with a group of mayors that are really advocating for the (country’s) leadership in the world and how that affects communities like Fremont,” he said. “For Fremont, we are an ag-based economy. We have a really strong economy and having access to kind of the global marketplace right here in Fremont is important.”

Spellerberg is part of the USGLC’s Nebraska Advisory Committee that features former U.S. Senator Ben Nelson and former congressman Doug Bereuter. The panel’s members include several mayors, including Stan Clouse of Kearney, Josh Moenning of Norfolk and Corey Stutte of Hastings.
