Midland University has received a Community Forestry Infrastructure grant of $50,300 from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum (NSA).

The award is part of funding made possible through the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry program, which provided $10 million in grant funds to NSA in 2024 to strengthen community forestry efforts across Nebraska.

Midland will use the grant to expand tree care and planting initiatives across campus. Planned efforts include continued removal of storm-damaged or declining trees, strategic pruning to support long-term tree health and safety, and the planting of new trees to diversify species and strengthen canopy resilience. Funding will also support expanded educational and workforce development opportunities tied to community forestry, creating hands-on learning experiences for students and strengthening partnerships with local organizations.

These efforts benefit the Midland University Heritage Arboretum, an accredited site within the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum’s network of more than 100 arboretums and public gardens. The funding will help ensure the continued growth, sustainability, and accessibility of the Heritage Arboretum.
