Fremont Public Schools recently honored Dale Olson as the 2024 Friend of Education Award recipient.

Olson was honored in front of about 800 employees of FPS during their opening session celebration on Aug. 16. FPS staff achieving
milestones in their careers were recognized during the 90-minute celebration for years of service in five-year increments. Marilyn Puepke was honored as she begins her 45th year of service in Fremont.

The Friend of Education Award is the highest distinction and award that FPS bestows to a deserving member/members of the community. Award criteria includes the commitment, service and innovation toward the education of students.

Olson graduated from West Point High School, attended Midland Lutheran College for a semester, and then enlisted in the United States Navy for two-and-a-half years. After his military service, he attended the University of Nebraska where he earned a degree in Engineering. Upon graduation from the University, Olson went to work for what was then, Valley Manufacturing — and would later co-found Valmont Industries.

Olson retired from Valmont after 38 years as an engineer, but he remained very active in supporting the community of Fremont. His involvement has reached many organizations including the Fremont Community Foundation, First United Methodist Church, Fremont Family YMCA, The Salvation Army of Fremont, Fremont Area United Way, Fremont Art Association, Fremont Rotary Club, Midland University, and of course Fremont Public Schools and the Fremont Public School Foundation.

”Dale is well known throughout the area for supporting many activities and efforts designed to help young people succeed,” FPS Superintendent Mark Shepard said. “As you drive around the community there are a number of facilities and donor recognitions which include the Olson’s – Fremont and FPS are fortunate for his commitment to our community and schools.”

Olson’s most recent contribution to the FHS Career Technical Education Center has put him at the top-tier Cornerstone donor level providing sustainability funding for the career-based programming present in the recently opened facility.

The 99-year-old Olson shared comments with the staff about the important role each of them play in helping young people find success. He also thanked the Board of Education and administration for the recognition.
