Site chosen for new Fremont Police Station

A brand new facility, housing the Fremont Police Department and 911 center, will be located along Eighth Street, from Main Street to “D” Street.

The site is part of the overall development of the block. City officials have worked in cooperation with RVR Bank and AO* Architects to develop plans for the police station and a new RVR Bank branch in this area.

Mayor Joey Spellerberg is pleased a decision has been reached and is eager to continue the process.

“This new police department will accommodate future growth, help us to recruit officers, allow us to better serve the community, and be a catalyst project for the area,” Spellerberg said. “We have had multiple studies since 2011 revealing our need for a new facility, and it is time to move forward. I want to thank RVR Bank for their partnership and commitment through this process. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Chuck Johannsen, President/CEO of RVR Bank, is also looking forward to the development.

“RVR Bank is pleased to collaborate with the City of Fremont on the new police station plan,” he said. “We’re also really excited to determine what our new downtown branch presence will look like.”

Fremont Police Chief, Jeff Elliott, believes this decision is a step in the right direction.

“We’ve been in need of a new facility for a long time and the choice of this location appears to be a positive development,” he said.

Studies have shown the existing police station is undersized and outdated. The newly selected site can hold up to a 42,000 square foot facility which will accommodate the current needs of the police department as well as future growth.

In 2020, a bond proposal to build a combined Police Station, Sheriff’s Department and 911 center at 29th and Lincoln Streets did not advance. At that time, feedback indicated a preference for the police station and 911 center to remain located in the downtown area.

“Remaining part of the downtown community while expanding our footprint and updating the facilities for the police officers and 911 operators is an exciting prospect,” said Shelly Holzerland, Director of Communications at the 911 center.

A public open house is being held to discuss an overall vision of the area including the current police station, east to “C” Street and 9th Street to Military Avenue. The open house will be held at 5 p.m. Nov. 15 at Gallery 92 West, 92 West Sixth Street.
