A postal service employee from Tekamah was sentenced on Monday for desertion of mail.
U.S. Attorney Steven Russell said 36-year-old Matthew Doherty, II, of Omaha, was sentenced on Monday in federal court in Omaha. He was charged for desertion of mail and will serve a two-year term of probation.
According to court documents, Doherty was employed as a mail carrier in Tekamah from Feb. 28 to March 9 of 2022 and took possession of mail that was meant to be delivered to its recipients. Instead of delivering all of the mail or returning it to the post office or to another authorized Postal Service employee, Doherty threw away at least 46 pieces of mail in a dumpster in Tekamah.
This case was investigated by the United States Postal Service – Office of the Inspector General.
