Vietnam War veteran Arthur Alston addresses the crowd during Monday morning’s Memorial Day program at Veterans Park.

Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg told the Memorial Day program crowd at Veterans Park that no one should forget those who paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

“As President Ronald Reagan once stated, when we honor our flag we honor what we stand for as a nation: freedom, equality, justice and hope,” he said. “What we remember today on Memorial Day is that these values that make our nation great are not free. They come at a cost and a price.”

Vietnam veteran Arthur Alston was the featured speaker at the event that drew about 200 people. Veterans laid wreaths representing the various branches of the military while members of the Fremont Honor Guard provided the three-volley gun salute.

Kris Paronto, a former U.S. Army Ranger, and Dan Whitney, AKA Larry the Cable Guy, delivered recorded messages.

Paronto urged the crowd to not only remember the sacrifices of those who died in service for their country but to celebrate those heroes.

Whitney echoed those thoughts in his message.

“Don’t ever forget what this day is about,” he said.
