MARION, Ind. – It took extra innings in the opening game between (RV) Midland University and No. 12 Lindsey Wilson College on Monday. After an early pitcher’s duel, the bats came alive for both teams. The Warriors prevailed after scoring four runs in the extra inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams were held in check by the starting pitchers and defense through five innings. In the 6th, Midland broke through with three runs. After Emily Prai and Aliyah Rincon reached on a single and a double, respectively, Roni Foote cleared the bases with a home run to right-center.

The Blue Raiders battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom with a lead-off walk followed by a home run of their own.

In the 7th, Carly Pfitzer kept the scoring going as she hit a solo shot over the same section of the fence as Foote’s homer the inning before.

Down to their final out, Lindsey Wilson worked the bases loaded and then scored two runs to tie it on a blooper to right field. With runners still on the corners, the Warriors’ defense settled back in and got the third out.

Midland’s bats came through with a big 8th inning with the heart of their lineup getting things going. Kaitlyn Rickey started things with a one-out single through the left side. Mia Orduna then replaced her with a fielder’s choice.

With two outs recorded, the Warriors rallied as Diana Nisbett ran out an infield single played late by the pitcher. Pfitzer drove in the first run with a single to center field and then Sheridan Wayne launched the third home run of the day for Midland, making the score 8-4.

Despite having their 2-3-4 hitters coming to the plate, the Blue Raiders’ offense could only muster one run, a two-out solo home run.

Rincon went the complete game, allowing five hits and five runs while striking out five batters, to pick up the win.

“It was a solid team win,” commented head coach Beth Singleton. We did a great job battling through adversity and taking the game back. It was great to see Carly come through with big hits today.”
