City, county pursue inland port authority

The City of Fremont, Dodge County, the Greater Fremont Development Council, and the Greater Omaha Chamber Economic Development Partnership announced today the outline of an Interlocal Agreement to pursue the Nebraska Municipal Inland Port Authority Act to be located just southeast of the City of Fremont.

This opportunity was created by legislation passed in May of 2021, which approved up to five inland port authorities to be awarded by the state. This proposed agreement that the city and Dodge County are jointly pursuing has the full support and assistance of the Greater Fremont Development Council and the Greater Omaha Chamber Economic Development Partnership.

The Fremont City Council and the Dodge County Board of Supervisors will be voting on the proposal in the coming week.

“Establishing an Inland Port Authority would position Fremont as a leading trade and logistics hub and continue to help stimulate the growth of our local and state economy,” Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg said. “Our accessibility to the first- and second-largest railroad system in the U.S., vast four-lane highway transportation network, centralized location, growing economy and access to workforce make Fremont a prime location for the Inland Port Authority.”

The Inland Port Authority is created through an ordinance passed by the city council or the county of the proposed inland port location or through an interlocal agreement.

Once passed, the local government then forwards the ordinance to the Nebraska Department of Economic Development as part of the application process for the Inland Port Authority. By pursuing this opportunity, Fremont and Dodge County are designating an area of focus for industrial development for the future and creating a mechanism for the development of infrastructure.
