National Weather Service rolling out new warning system

The National Weather Service is rolling out a new warning system for severe thunderstorms.

Meteorologist Clint Aegerter with NWS in Valley said officials hope to have it operational by Aug 2.

“The main idea is to be able to get the message out a little bit better,” he said. “I know a lot of people have heard about the WEA or wireless emergency alert system. Those are those notifications you get on your cell phone. Usually, you’ll get it when there is a tornado warning or an Amber Alert or flash flood warnings. Now we’re including severe thunderstorm warnings when they are particularly strong.”

The latter will activate now when there are 80-mile-per-hour winds or baseball-sized hail.

Aegerter said it is a simple process to make sure you receive the notifications.

“It is just a setting on your phone,” he said. “Most modern Smartphones have it. You just check your settings and if it is turned on, it is turned on. You don’t need to sign up for anything. It is a pretty simple thing and we hope it helps in keeping everybody safe.”
