FREMONT (October 29) – A Thursday evening crash on east 23rd Street has led to one fatality.
A 2010 Volkswagen Jetta was being driven east by a single male occupant on 23rd Avenue. At roughly 6:55 pm, the driver struck the center median. The driver was able to bring the vehicle back onto the roadway, but then veered south and left the roadway crossing east 23rd Avenue South.
The vehicle kept going and crashed into two vehicles that were parked and unoccupied in the parking lot of Koplin Auto Care. Finally, the vehicle came to a stop after colliding into the corner of the Tire and Wheel Center of the Koplin Auto Care building.
During the accident, the driver also struck the guide wire of a power pole which caused a power outage between Bell Street and Luther Road for some time.
Responding officers found the driver unresponsive upon arrival and began to perform CPR on him until Fremont Fire and Rescue arrived.
The driver was then transported to Fremont Methodist Health where he was later pronounced dead.
FPD was very busy at the scene directing traffic as multiple stoplights were out due to the power outage, causing the scene to be very dangerous as it was already dark outside. Fremont Police shared this video on its Facebook Page at 7:30 pm to have drivers avoid the area if possible.
The utility department was eventually able to restore power and no further accidents were reported. The cause of the accident itself is still under investigation. FPD will release names and other related information once it is confirmed that next of kin have been notified.
