FARGO, N.D – Midland University’s women’s hockey team was back in action this past weekend against familiar faces, playing a second series against the North Dakota State University Bison on Saturday and Sunday in Fargo, North Dakota. The Warriors won handily and looked to be the same dominant team they were when they faced the Bison two weeks ago at home.
Midland shut out the Bison in game one while scoring seven goals through the first two periods. The Warriors led 2-0 after the first period and then gave themselves plenty of breathing room with five second period goals.
A hat-trick from freshman Kayla Flanigan fueled the Warriors offensive attack, as well as three assists from senior Katie Selling. Other goal scorers in the opening game of the weekend series were Mylie Ketterson, Kenzie Bertolas and Robin Hatcher (2).
The Warriors outdid their shutout performance with a 13-1 victory on Sunday. A quick 4-0 lead in the first period set the tone for the game and the lead never wavered with five more goals in the second period and four in the third. Sophomore Maggie Marcotte earned a hat-trick with three goals on the day. Ten other Warriors scored one goal each. Ally Conybear, Alicia Williams, and Stelling netted a goal in the first. Bertolas, Hatcher, Ketterson, and Grace Halvorson score in the middle period. Maxine Mass, Ally Rakowski, and Flanigan scored in the third period.
“It was another solid weekend for us, getting two more wins,” commented head coach Jason White. “The girls worked hard during their shifts and the scoreboard showed that. It was great to get some more experience for our younger players. We’ve still got some things to work on and will get them taken care of before our next set of games.”
Midland (4-0) will now have an extended break as they prepare to face the Minot State University Beavers (0-0) in Minot, North Dakota, November 6-8. The three-game series will take place at Maysa Arena at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
