FREMONT – The Fremont Kiwanis club is ready to kick off the 35th Annual National Night Out Event after postponing in August due to COVID-19.
Fremont Kiwanis holds the national event every year to bring awareness to crime and drug prevention.
“This year has been quite different, but I’m really looking forward to National Night Out of 2020,” said Kiwanis chairperson, Diane Brown.
The free, local event will take place at John C. Fremont City Park from 6-7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 6th.
Diane Brown has been the chairperson for the event for the last four years, and said, “My main goal this year is just to have a good turnout because of the weather and it being moved to October.”
Brown says they do have a backup location at Lineham Gym if rain or other related weather conditions keep the event from occurring outside.
The Fremont Noon Kiwanis and Fremont Police Department will be partnering to host the event. Fremont Kiwanis will be located under the picnic shelter and other organizations/businesses taking part in the event will have tables spread out around John C. Fremont Park.
The Fremont Fire Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, local businesses, community organizations, emergency personnel, and law enforcement will have activities, games, demonstrations, and information available at their tables for attendees.
“It’s basically just getting parents out there with their kids, so they can experience what Fremont is all about and what our community can offer them. Safety has always been a major concern of mine, especially when my kids were little, so it’s always been my goal to make sure kids are protected. I try to find ways to get parents information if they’re needing assistance with that and hopefully, they can carry that on to their kids and they will grow up and be able to do the same for theirs. Children’s safety is what this event is all about here in Fremont,” said Brown.
Thousands of communities host the National Night Out Event each year which focuses on

  • Bringing awareness to crime and drug prevention measures
  • Repair and build ties between the community and law enforcement
  • Encourages the community to get involved in local anticrime efforts

“We want people in our community to feel comfortable asking our police, fire departments, and others for assistance when they need it. We’re bringing awareness to the fact that it really is okay to ask for help,” said Brown.
39 communities in Nebraska, alone, participate in the National Night Out Event each year, and over 16,500 communities, with roughly 38 million people total, host and attend the event across the United States.
