Fremont is losing its mayor to a state office.

Gov. Jim Pillen announced Monday that Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese is stepping down. He will be replaced by Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg.

Briese said he is stepping down to spend more time with his family. He said it “has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Nebraska.”

The governor lauded Spellerberg’s experience as a Fremont businessman and city leader.

“I’ve known Joey a number of years, been extraordinary and impressed with all the work,” Pillen said.

The mayor, who was flanked by his wife, Ashley, and their four children during the announcement, said he has enjoyed his tenure as mayor. He was first elected in 2020 and re-elected last November.

“This call to service came unexpectedly,” the Fremont native said. “I am ready and excited to get to work.”

Spellerberg said his resignation as Mayor of Fremont will take effect at midnight Wednesday. Plans are he will be sworn in as state treasurer Thursday.

Ward 2 Councilman Dev Sookram, who is the council president, will assume the role of mayor.
