SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Midland University was back in action on Sunday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa, competing in the Charger Classic against St. Ambrose University. The Warriors fell to the Fighting Bees, 62-48.
Jenna Weber opened the scoring for Midland with a layup and a free throw, recording five of the team’s first seven points. St. Ambrose answered with a layup from Hayley Flores. The Warriors started strong defensively, holding the Fighting Bees to just three points over the first three minutes and 15 seconds of play. An 8-1 run by Midland stretched its lead to 17-9 before St. Ambrose responded with five straight points to trim the deficit to three. The Warriors led 17-14 after the opening quarter.
Six quick points from the Fighting Bees helped them reclaim the lead, 20-17, early in the second period. A 3-pointer by Skylar Indra halted a 12-0 run by St. Ambrose. Back-to-back baskets from Indra and Weber cut the Fighting Bees’ lead to five with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Midland closed the half on a 7-4 run and trailed by two, 33-31, heading into the intermission.
Out of the halftime break, a 6-0 burst from the Warriors helped them regain the lead, 37-33, with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. St. Ambrose called a timeout after a 10-2 Midland run with four minutes left in the quarter. Following the timeout, the teams traded baskets before a late steal and score by St. Ambrose gave the Bees a one-point advantage entering the final period.
Midland’s offense stalled in the fourth quarter. A free throw by Indra ended a 10-0 run by St. Ambrose, and a layup by Tyra Berry cut the deficit to 11 with two and a half minutes to play. The Fighting Bees outscored the Warriors 5-2 down the stretch to seal the win.
Weber led Midland in scoring for the second straight game with 18 points and added nine rebounds. Indra was close behind with eight rebounds, while Berry, making her first collegiate start, contributed five points and two boards.
Midland shot 20-of-64 (31.3%) from the field, while St. Ambrose went 24-of-72 (33.3%). The Fighting Bees outrebounded the Warriors 50-43, though Midland’s bench held a 17-4 scoring advantage.
Midland (0-2) will remain on the road to face Dickinson State on Friday, Nov. 7, in Bellevue, Nebraska, with tip-off scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The Warriors will play back-to-back days once more as they are competing in the Fairfield Inn & Suites Downtown Classic.
