WAYNE, Neb. – Midland University traveled to Wayne, Nebraska, on Saturday afternoon for a nonconference matchup with Wayne State College. A second-half surge by the Wildcats lifted them to a 5-0 win over the Warriors.
Wayne State got on the board late in the first half with a goal in the 34th minute, sending Midland into halftime trailing 1-0. The Wildcats dominated the opening half in shot attempts, outshooting the Warriors 17-1, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.
The Wildcats extended their lead early in the second half with a goal in the 47th minute to go up 2-0. Wayne State continued to apply pressure, adding goals in the 61st and 81st minutes, along with a penalty kick conversion to make it 4-0.
Wayne State finished the match with a commanding 36-2 advantage in total shots and a 12-0 edge in shots on goal.
Julia Sweeney made her first start of the season in goal for Midland, playing all 90 minutes and recording seven saves.
Midland (1-3-1) will open Great Plains Athletic Conference play on the road in Sioux Center, Iowa, against Dordt University. Match time is set for 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
