An area educator has been chosen the 2025 Middle School Teacher-of-the Year by the Nebraska American Legion.

Kerry Reker, the sixth-grade science teacher at Douglas County West Public Schools in Valley, has been recognized as an outstanding teacher who promotes Americanism, patriotism and supports veterans and active-duty military in her community.

Reker has been teaching for 19 years. The Legion said she promotes learning for all students through hands-on activities and making everyone feel respected.

The Legion adds that she devotes hours outside of the classroom to working with her colleagues to create a positive culture in the school and assisting students. She fosters patriotism and civic responsibility in all of her students and assists with the Veterans Day program.

Reker is also a supporter of veterans and the local American Legion Post.

Julie Ricenbaw of Friend is the Elementary School Teacher-of-the Year. Ricenbaw is the K-12 Special Education teacher in that district.

The High School Teacher-of-the Year is Christopher Work of Plattsmouth. Work is that district’s vocal music instructor.
