Fremont Public Schools Superintendent Mark Shepard will retire from the district effective on June 30.

Shepard made the announcement to parents and staff in a letter today. The FPS Board of Education will act on it at Monday night’s meeting.

In his letter, Shepard said he had been contemplating retirement for the past several years. Following the passage of the $123 million bond issue in September of 2021, he said he was committed to seeing those projects through to completion.

Shepard said that the strength of the district is truly in its people. He noted the consistency on the Board of Education, the administration and among staff.

“Many school districts today are revolving doors for people – this leads to being pulled and tugged in many directions following the latest trend,” he said in the letter. “This consistency has led to the passage of bond issues, budgets, tax levies and meeting challenges with the support of our community.”

Shepard also lauded the team he works with at FPS.

“From our leadership team to our certified and support staff we have a strong commitment to seeing our students in Fremont develop to their fullest potential,” he said. “You all have made my job very rewarding and enjoyable.”

Shepard said he and his wife, Kim, are thankful for the years in Fremont serving staff, students and community. He thanked the Board of Education, staff and community for their support.

The superintendent closed his letter by saying he plans on spending more time with family and also doing some consulting with school districts.

“This will allow me to stay connected and continue my interests and passion building on the relationships I have built over the past 35 years,” he said.
