FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University hosted Waldorf University for a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup on a Saturday night on its home turf at Heedum Field. Midland dominated offensively and defensively to earn the 4-0 shutout over Waldorf in the battle of Warriors.
Midland took the early advantage in the contest with a goal in the 13th minute. A corner-kick off the foot of Rosa Schellmann found Ashley Atkinson who headed the ball through the net. That score would hold as the teams went to the locker room following the first half.
After the intermission, Dana Gomez scored on a header of her own as she pushed the ball over the keeper with an assist from Atkinson in the 53rd minute. That jumpstarted the attack as Midland went on to tally two more scores.
In the 80th minute, Rosa Schellmann dribbled her way through the Waldorf defenders and sent the ball soaring into the back of the net to put Midland up 3-0. Moments later, Hanna Schimmer used her speed to work around the defense and went head-to-head with the keeper. She found the back of the net in the 82nd minute for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Midland dominated in shots 26-4 over Waldorf. Just under half were on target as they held an 11-2 advantage.
Hannah Tillison earned the clean slate as she played 90 minutes in goal, picking up two saves.
“Proud of the girls for battling through in a game where we weren’t our best,” commented head coach Cody Bartlow. “To win 4-0 when you’re not totally clicking is a testament to their hard work and dedication to one another. To have four different goal scorers shows the depth of our squad. We are looking forward to matching up with Dordt next week.”
Midland (5-2-1, 2-0 GPAC) will head to Sioux Center, Iowa to take on Dordt (3-2-1, 1-0-1 GPAC) in an important conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m. on September 23 at the Dordt Soccer Complex.
