FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University women’s soccer took on York University on home turf Saturday evening. Strong defensive play led to a shutout while a second-half goal sealed the win at Heedum Field.
The Warriors had a slow start, yielding only one of the first seven shots on target in the first frame. Defensively, they were solid, holding the Panthers to only two shots, one on frame.
After a half, the teams were still looking to break the scoreless game. Off a free-kick in the 72nd minute, Rosa Schellmann was able to score to give the Warriors the lead.
Midland completed the shutout as they put up a solid defense, holding the Panthers to only two shots. Hannah Tillison played the full 90 minutes to earn the clean sheet while collecting one save on the night.
“We got the result, which is the most important part, and to start the season 2-0,” head coach Cody Bartlow said post-game. “As we head to California, we have a lot to clean up. We did not play anywhere to our potential tonight. We had a great free-kick goal that saved our blisses, honestly. I thought York was much improved from last year. They worked hard and it seemed like they wanted the game more than us. We just had a quality moment that gave us the result. A win is a win, and we will go home happy with it, but we know we have a lot of work to do to improve and reach the heights we expect to be at.”
Midland (2-0) will trip to Carlsbad, California, to take on Hope International (2-1). The matchup will take place on Friday, September 1 at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
