Fremont High School has announced the hiring of three new head coaches for volleyball, girls basketball and boys track & field.
Sami Hansen will lead the volleyball program. She replaces Andrew Wehrli, who recently resigned from the position.
Hansen is currently the director of camps and events as well as a head coach at Nebraska Elite Volleyball. She served as an assistant coach for four years at Omaha Duchesne where the team made three state appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2019.
Hansen served as an assistant coach last fall for FHS. This will be her sixth year of coaching prep volleyball.
“Fremont High School is excited to have Sami take over as the head coach of our volleyball program,” Fremont Activities Director Scott Anderson said. “Sami has built positive relationships with our student-athletes during her time as an assistant coach at FHS and we look forward to a continued run of success under her guidance.”
Connor Lusso is replacing Kelly Flynn, who retired in the spring, as the girls basketball coach.
Lusso is currently a physical education teacher at FHS. This will be his first year as a high school head coach and his sixth year of coaching basketball. He was previously an assistant coach for the FHS boys basketball team.
“Fremont High School is excited to add a coach of Connor’s caliber to our already strong, girls coaching staff,” Anderson said. “Connor and his staff are well prepared to lead the girls basketball program to success now and in the future.”
Sean and Beth McMahon have been named the co-head coaches for boys track and field.
The McMahons, who are both science teachers at FHS, have a long history of coaching cross country.
Sean has also been a boys assistant track coach (distance) since 1998 and was a girls assistant (jumps) for one year prior to that. Beth has been the boys assistant track coach (hurdles) since 2006, and was a girls assistant (hurdles) for the three years prior to that.
The two have helped the Tigers to three state championships and three state runner-up finishes in boys track. They will replace Dave Sellon, who retired in the spring.
“We are excited to promote Sean and Beth to the position of co-head track coaches,” Anderson said. “Their long track record of success has positioned them well to sustain the high level of success that the boys track and field team has had for many years well into the future.”
