Annual fireworks show set for Sunday night

It was in the early 2000s when Ron Vlach found out that Fremont’s Fourth of July Fireworks Show was in jeopardy.

“Whoever was putting on the show at Fremont decided it was too much work and too much planning,” said Vlach, a military veteran. “We figured that all of the smaller communities around Fremont have a fireworks show so I talked to a few of my friends and they said we should just resurrect it.”

Vlach has done just that. This marks the 21st year for the annual fireworks display. The 2022 event is scheduled for 10 p.m. Sunday at Christensen Field. The rain date is Monday.

The display wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of numerous sponsors.

“They are the key,” said Vlach, who owns Victory Marine in Fremont. “The city lets us use the airport and the sponsors pay for 100% of the show. We just can’t thank them enough.”

The organizer said Fremont’s show has a unique aspect to it.

“We do something that no other fireworks show can do because we use the entire 5,000 feet of runway for part of our finale,” he said. “If anyone has ever seen the show, it is awesome.”

Vlach believes this year’s finale will be memorable.

“We’re going to try something different this year that we’ve never done before,” he said. “We tried something a few years ago but it didn’t work because it rained and got wet that afternoon. The only thing I can say is that you will feel the heat before you see the flash. That’s all I want to say about the surprise at the end.”
