NU defensive lineman Feist to conduct Yutan camp

Colton Feist wanted to give back to the Yutan community where he starred on the football field for the Chieftains from 2014-17.

The University of Nebraska defensive lineman is doing just that with a football camp that is scheduled next month in his hometown.

The camp, for boys and girls entering grades 2-8, is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 13. It will feature Feist and several of his Nebraska teammates, including offensive lineman Keegan Menning of Fremont and running back Trevin Luben of Wahoo.

Another NU player scheduled to appear, receiver Wyatt Liewer, put on a similar camp last summer in his hometown of O’Neill. Feist, who is a Liewer’s roommate, appeared at the event.

“We had a great turnout and the kids loved it,” Feist said. “I wanted to do it in Yutan last year, but we just didn’t have the time because the whole new (name, image and likeness) rule didn’t start until July 1. I just figured this year I would bring this back to our area and bring some excitement back.”

Feist brought plenty of excitement to the Chieftains when he led them to the Class C-2 state championship during his senior year. He recorded 110 tackles that fall, including 22 for a loss. He finished with 13 sacks and earned Super-State honors.

Last fall, injuries sidelined Feist for the first two games of the season, but he made his season debut against Buffalo and broke up a pass. He saw action in seven straight games before his season was shut down due to injury.

“I broke my foot twice,” Feist said. “I broke it in camp and then I probably tried to come back a little early. I was out again the last three games. I’m looking forward to this year. I’m feeling good.”

He is optimistic that the Huskers can improve from last year’s 3-9 record.

“Spring ball went well and I think we can have a great season,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of new people in place. I’m excited, especially for Ireland (against Northwestern) since that is our first game (Aug. 27).”

First up, though, is the Yutan camp where he is eager to teach young players fundamentals.

“I think more so we’re looking forward to just being great role models for these kids in the area and letting them have fun at something like this,” Feist said. “We’re having competitions at the end where they can compete against each other and win some prizes. I know (the kids) will have a good time.”

The cost is $40 per camper and includes a T-shirt if registered by June 15. Players can register at nextlevelnebraska.com.
