FREMONT, Neb.- Free throws led the way for Midland University women’s basketball to take the win over Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) opponent University of Jamestown 64-50 on Saturday night inside the Wikert Event Center. The Warriors scored 26 of their 64 points to improve to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The first quarter represented both teams taking shots for the lead and it started as a back and forth battle. After 10 minutes of play, the quarter ended 12-10 in favor of the Jimmies and it became apparent they were going to use pressure on defense to create turnovers.
Despite the deficit, the Warriors took over the lead and then created distance in the second quarter with Emma Shepard taking control with eight points in a four-minute span. The press for the Jimmies led to more fouls than turnovers, and it gave the Warriors eight points off free throws. They gained confidence at the charity stripe and had the lead at halftime, 27-21.
While giving in to a few runs to the Jimmies during the second half, the Warriors never lost the lead. Peyton Wingert put her stamp on the game in the fourth quarter with seven points in the final quarter. The offensive burst gave the Warriors their biggest lead (14) of the night as they picked up their first conference win this season.
Four Warriors ended with double digits starting with Wingert’s 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists leading the way. Erin Prusa found her spots with 11 points and 7 rebounds, just a few time boards shy of a double-double. Karlee McKinney contributed 11 points while Emma Shepard had 10.
Up next for Midland (4-2, 1-1 GPAC) will be a home date with No. 17 Northwestern (6-0, 2-0 GPAC). They’ll tip-off with Raiders on Tuesday, November 23 at 6:00 p.m. at the Wikert Event Center.
