Fremont’s population grows as redistricting looms

Fremont’s population is the sixth-largest in the state according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The number of residents in the city grew from 26,397 in 2010 to 27,141 in 2020 — an increase of 2.8 percent.

Only Omaha (486,051), Lincoln (291,082), Bellevue (64,176), Grand Island (53,131) and Kearney (33,790) have larger populations than Fremont.

Dodge County saw an increase in population from 36,691 in 2010 to 37,167 in 2020. Saunders County jumped 7.2 percent from 20,780 to 22,278. Washington County also climbed 3.1 percent from 20,234 to 20,865. Saunders’ had the sixth-best percentage jump in the state.

Three of Fremont’s wards saw an increase. Ward 1 went from 6,885 to 7,000 while Ward 3 jumped from 6,767 to 6,916. Ward 4 climbed from 6,379 to 6,732. Ward 2 went down from 6,376 to 6,179.

Dodge County Supervisor District No. 6 dropped from 5,412 to 5,132 while No. 7 decreased from 5,214 in 2010 to 5,003 in 2020. All the other districts increased with No. 1 showing the biggest hike going from 5,189 to 5,699.

In his weekly update on Friday, Fremont City Administrator Brian Newton said redistricting law requires that each district and ward be substantially equal in population. To meet this requirement, each ward should have a target population of about 6,707.

Mayor Joey Spellerberg and Dodge County Supervisors Chairman Bob Missel have appointed representatives from the council and the board to review redistricting.

Gov. Pete Ricketts signed LB285 into law LB285 in May with the following timelines for redistricting:

  • October of 2021 — Counties draw precinct boundaries.
  • Nov. 1, 2021 — Deadline for county election officials to provide precinct maps.
  • Dec. 30, 2021 — Deadline for municipals and political subdivisions to provide boundary lines to county election officials.
  • Jan. 5, 2022 — Final deadline for any boundary adjustments to be made to be in effect for the 2022 primary election.
