Families came out Monday night to John C. Fremont Park to participate in the National Night Out.
The annual event, co-sponsored by Fremont Kiwanis and the Fremont Police Department, provides an opportunity for residents to meet and learn about various organizations in the community.
“I thought it went really well,” Fremont Police Lt. Ed Watts said. “There was a good turnout and I think the weather really cooperated. It wasn’t as hot as it has been recently. We had a lot of people stop by and look at our cruisers and visit the 911 table that we had.”
Watts said the children who attended asked a lot of good questions.
“They asked about the tools that we use every day,” he said. “A lot of the kids got to sit in the cruiser and see all the different things in there. … We also handed out a lot of stickers.”
The lieutenant believes the National Night Out event is beneficial for the community.
“I think it gives the citizens of Fremont the opportunity to interact with us because we’re not just driving around in our cars responding to calls,” he said. “It gives them the chance to express any concerns that they may have about things going on in their neighborhood or crime that is going on in the city.”
Event organizer Diane Brown of Kiwanis told Walnut Media last week that the event is a good way for the public to connect with organizations such as law enforcement. Watts agrees.
“It really is about building up relationships between us and the public,” he said. “It gives us a chance to interact more on a personal level.”
Watts stressed that his department is already looking forward to the National Night Out Event in 2022.
“We’re hoping to do more activities next year, maybe more games or a bounce house,” he said. “We’re hoping people are looking forward to next year because we are.”
