Velvet Haze to perform during Scribner celebration

A popular local band is reuniting for Scribner’s 150-year celebration.

Velvet Haze will be performing at 9 Saturday night as part of the three-day celebration. Event organizer Anne Poppe said there is a lot of excitement about the band’s performance.

“When we got them, that is what made this whole thing get a lot of momentum,” she said. “Back in the day — they are from Scribner — if you were getting married, you didn’t even ask anything. You just made sure that Velvet Haze could play that weekend and then you made all of the rest of your arrangements.”

Poppe said this will be the band’s farewell performance.

“They are a big deal,” she said. “This is actually the final time they are going to play because they sold a lot of their amps and stuff, but the drummer from Charm School Dropouts (who are performing at 10 Saturday) is from Scribner. They’ve been gracious enough to allow Velvet Haze to use a lot of their equipment.”

Poppe believes there will be a big crowd for the shows on Saturday night.

“It was a huge thing to get them,” she said. “It made people from out of state say, ‘You know what, I think I am going to come back.’ Everyone is really excited about it.”

Scribner resident George Stockamp will officially mark the start of the celebration at 5 Friday night in the city park by firing his homemade cannon.

“On Saturday night, we will have the presentation of awards and stuff at 7:30 so he will blow it off again at that time,” Poppe said.

Another unique part of the celebration is that there will be re-enactments of various businesses throughout the town’s history.

“The German Mutual Building was the library (at one time) so we staged the whole lobby like a library,” Poppe said. “But if you go down the street to the barbershop, that is more from the 1940s. We’ve done different eras. It kind of depended on which ones were most important or the ones people remembered the most.”

Poppe believes there is something for everyone at the celebration. Highlights on Friday include a wine and beer tasting in the park from 5 to 9 p.m. Jazz in the Park, featuring On the Rocks, is scheduled from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Saturday includes a 5K run/walk at 7 a.m., a car, truck, motorcycle and tractor show from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the downtown area, a historic cemetery walk from noon to 6 p.m. and polka and beer inside the fire hall from 3 to 6 p.m.

The Kidpalooza is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. There will also be various food options, including Zucker’s chicken served at the fire hall beginning at 5 Saturday night.

“I think everyone is really excited and things have kind of fallen into place,” Poppe said. “I think the weather is going to cooperate so hopefully everyone can have a good time.”
