The Dodge County Attorney’s Office confirmed Friday morning that former Dodge County Deputy Craig Harbaugh was found dead Thursday afternoon in his apartment in northwest Fremont.
Chief Deputy County Attorney Sara Sopinski said no foul play is suspected, but the matter is being investigated by the Fremont Police Department. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
In February, Harbaugh pled guilty in federal court to using his business to defraud six individuals and a federally insured bank of $10,9979,214.
In accordance with the plea, Harbaugh admitted to falsifying purchase orders and contracts for his business, Tactical Solutions Gear, in order to lure investors. He licensed that business as a federal firearms dealer with designs on landing law enforcement contracts.
Officials said the false documents gave the appearance that Harbaugh was doing business with law enforcement agencies from Wyoming, Illinois and Missouri as well as Werner Enterprises.
Federal prosecutors said the former deputy was operating a Ponzi scheme where he took money from one investor to pay another to give the appearance they were making money.
Harbaugh resigned from the sheriff’s office in November of 2019, following his federal indictment.
