Fire Prevention Fun Day set for Saturday

The Fremont Rural Fire Department and East Central Nebraska Fire Prevention Co-op are hosting their annual Fire Prevention Fun Day on Saturday.

The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fremont State Lakes Activity Center at Lake No. 16. A valid state park sticker is required to gain entrance to the park.

Event organizer Pam Pabian said the plan is to highlight fire prevention and fire safety. Many different entities will be present.

“We have OPPD (Omaha Public Power District) coming out and they’ll do a big demonstration with their trailer about staying away from live wires,” Pabian said. “Union Pacific will talk about railroad safety and the state patrol will come out with their rollover seatbelt simulator. We have a hazard house that shows kids what to do with that and we have a smoke trailer.”

Smokey the Bear and Sparky will also be on hand. There will be free hamburgers, hot dogs and chips.

“We also have all kinds of games,” Pabian said. “Things like bean bag toss and Plinko. There is just a ton of stuff to do.”

Fremont Rural is one of 13 fire departments participating in the event. The others are: Arlington, Blair, Clarkson, David City, Linwood, North Bend, Morse Bluff, Plattsmouth, Schuyler, Scribner, Snyder and Winslow.

Pabian believes that unity has helped make the event successful.

“I think people see we’re all coming together as communities and that is what makes it work,” she said. “We have repeat people that come back each year.”

Last year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19.

“We hated to not have it and people were disappointed, but we’re glad to be back this year,” Pabian said.
