Nelda Campbell has always looked to help people. Now her family is hoping area residents can provide some support for the Fremont woman.
Campbell and her husband, Dennis, were involved in a car accident Feb. 21 in Saunders County. Dennis died as a result of the crash while Nelda has been hospitalized with serious injuries, including two broken legs, broken ribs and a fractured T12.
“They were kind of a perfect match,” said Brenda Sweet, the aunt of Nelda. “Nelda is a very kind-hearted and giving person. She is willing to lend a helping hand at all times. She is a happy and very strong woman. Dennis was very much the same way.”
Sweet and Dawn Clary, Nelda’s sister, have organized a gofundme medical expense fund for Campbell.
Sweet said her niece suffered a stroke last week, but is improving each day.
“Last Friday was the last of three surgeries,” she said. “On Sunday she had a blood transfusion as her blood count was low. On Monday it was a better day. She got to sit up for a couple of hours and today (Tuesday) they are doing a heart scan to see what caused the stroke that she had last Tuesday. She is able to drink water and eat soft foods. She is very determined and has started physical therapy.”
Sweet is hopeful that area residents can help Campbell, who has worked as a cafeteria supervisor for Fremont Public Schools for more than five years.
“Dawn and I wanted to do this because we know that her medical bills are going to be astronomical,” Sweet said. “She faces a long road in front of her with physical therapy and getting back to the so-called normal. We don’t know what the future will bring for her and how soon she’ll be able to return to work. It’s a tremendous financial burden so that is why we chose to do this.”
Businesses or individuals can contribute in different ways.
“People can go to our gofundme page, but if they prefer they can send the donations to me,” Sweet said, noting people can contact her at 402-719-8016.
Sweet is grateful for the assistance Campbell has already received.
“I want to thank everyone for their continued love and support for Nelda,” she said. “It is greatly appreciated and the community has been wonderful. People have reached out to us and we are very thankful.”
