FREMONT, Neb. – Defense was at a premium on Tuesday night inside the Wikert Event Center as Midland University fell to Concordia University in a high-scoring affair. Both teams shot over 53% from the field as the Warriors fell to the Bulldogs, 95-81. Midland was 32-of-61 (52.5%) from the field while Concordia shot 34-of-56 for a blistering 60.7% for the game.
For the majority of the game, it was closely contested on the scoreboard. However, a 12-2 run just past the 10-minute mark of the first half and another 11-2 run at the start of the second half helped the Bulldogs cruise to the 14-point victory.
In the opening half, Midland relied on the inside play of Josh Lambert, who posted 12 points in the first 20 minutes on perfect 6-of-6 shooting. On the perimeter, Midland was able to convert six three-pointers, including three from Bo Sandquist who had nine points the break. Jake Rueschhoff had a pair of triples and scored nine points as well before the intermission. However, Concordia was able to make 10-of-15 from behind the arc and shot 69.2%, and held a 50-37 lead.
After halftime, the long-range shooting success continued for both teams as the Bulldogs hit six more three-pointers and the Warriors added seven. Rueschhoff and Sandquist both added two more to their total while Colby Tichota also added two over the final 20 minutes.
The Warriors trailed by as many as 22 but battle back late in the game. After falling behind by their largest margin, Midland went on a 15-7 run to close the game.
Rueschhoff led the team with 21 points while Lambert, Sandquist, and Tichota all joined him in double figures with 16, 15, and 11 respectively.
Midland (3-9, 1-8 GPAC) will be back in action once more before a short holiday break. They’ll hit the road to take on league-leading Dakota Wesleyan (9-1, 6-0 GPAC) on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Attendance is limited per local guidelines, with priority given to the family of participating players.
