FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University faced off against Concordia University for the second time this season on Tuesday night in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) action. The Warriors fell behind early and trailed by as much as 14 points before a second-half comeback. Despite coming all the way back in the third, and taking and a four-point lead into the final quarter, Midland ultimately fell to the Bulldogs, 67-59 inside Wikert Event Center in Fremont, Nebraska.
Concordia used a barrage of three-pointers in the first half to build a 20-10 lead after one-quarter of play and had a 37-23 lead just before halftime. Emma Shepard would pull the Warriors deficit back to an even dozen before heading into the halftime locker room. Katy Gathje led the team with eight first-half points on 3-of-5 shooting.
After the intermission, Midland went on an 11-4 run in the first three-and-half minutes to narrow the gap even more. Lexi Kraft started the run with a three-pointer while Peyton Wingert, who was named GPAC Player-of-the-Week for her play a week ago, added two triples of her own.
The two teams would trade buckets the next few minutes before Midland went on an 11-0 run to close the third quarter. Sam Shepard sparked the run with a long-range three-pointer and added another, moments later.
The Warriors’ run was halted at the start of the fourth as Concordia when on a 6-0 run of their own to regain the lead.
In the fourth, Midland was limited to just seven points after posting 27 in the third. Concordia posted 19 points on their way to an eight-point victory.
Wingert led the Warriors in scoring with 16 points on the night while Gathje and Sam Shepard each added 12 points.
Midland (9-3, 6-3 GPAC) will look to bounce back this weekend as they hit the road once more before the holiday break. They’ll travel to Mitchell, South Dakota to take on Dakota Wesleyan (3-3, 1-3 GPAC). The game is set for a 4:00 p.m. inside The World’s Only Corn Palace. Tickets are limited to families of players participating due to local health guidelines.
