Midland Falls in Sunday Doubleheader Against Morningside

FREMONT, Neb. — Midland University wrapped up its four-game series against Morningside as it hosted a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Warriors dropped both contests, falling 9-0 in Game 1 and 18-1 in Game 2.

GAME ONE: Morningside 9, Midland 0

The Mustangs took an early lead, putting five runs on the board off three hits and two Midland errors in the first inning.

Back-to-back singles by Owen Glover and Anthony Martinez put two Warriors on base, and both advanced on a passed ball. Jimmy Martinez then drew a walk to load the bases, but Morningside kept Midland off the scoreboard by recording the final outs in the bottom of the second inning.

Morningside added two more runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Mustangs capped the game’s scoring with a home run in the top of the seventh inning. Midland loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh as Adian Smith drew a walk, Brody Boyle singled and Dax Wandler was hit by a pitch, but Morningside held on to secure the 9-0 shutout.

GAME TWO: Morningside 18, Midland 1 (7 innings)

After a quiet first inning, Morningside carried its momentum into the second inning, scoring seven runs on five hits, including a two-run home run and one Midland error.

Midland scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning following back-to-back singles by Hunter Spencer and Adam Muniz Jr. Chase Bouges entered as a runner, and both Spencer and Bouges advanced on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch brought Spencer home to make it 7-1.

The Mustangs added seven more runs in the third inning with back-to-back home runs and a three-run home run to extend the lead to 14-1.

Morningside added its final runs in the fifth inning with a solo home run followed by a two-run home run to push the lead to 18-1.

The Mustangs kept Midland scoreless over the final two innings to secure the 18-1 win in seven innings.

Midland (11-20, 6-6 GPAC) will host Hastings College (16-14, 4-8 GPAC) on Thursday, April 2, in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., with Game 2 to follow.
