Gary W. Overfield, 74, of Fremont passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

Gary was born on January 29, 1952, in Falls City to Herbert C. Overfield Jr. and Patricia (Trull) Overfield. He grew up in Falls City, where he graduated from Falls City High School with the class of 1970. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Midland Lutheran College in 1974 and later completed his Master’s degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. On November 29, 1974, Gary married the love of his life, Kathleen “Kathy” Anderson.

A dedicated educator for his entire career, Gary began teaching in Norfolk and taught for 31 years at Arlington Public Schools before retiring in 2007. Even in retirement, he remained passionate about education and continued teaching as an adjunct professor at Midland University and Metro Community College.

Gary was deeply committed to serving the Fremont community. For more than 40 years, he volunteered with the Low Income Ministry, and was also involved with Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, Kiwanis, and most recently with Meals on Wheels. He was a longtime member of Sinai Lutheran Church, where he actively contributed through Sunday school, music ministry, and church council.

He will be remembered for his exceptional writing skills and his quiet, consistent kindness toward everyone he met.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; daughter, Sarah (Kyle) Behm; son, Michael (Amanda) Overfield; and granddaughters, Lily, Juniper, and Linden.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Sinai Lutheran Church in Fremont with Pastor Al Duminy officiating. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont.

Burial will take place at Salem Cemetery near Oakland.
