FREMONT, Neb. — Midland University traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, to face Morningside University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to open the four-game weekend series against the Mustangs. The Warriors dropped both games on the road, falling 18-3 in game one and 7-5 in game two.

GAME ONE: Morningside 18, Midland 3

The Mustangs got on the board in the first inning with a single and a double to bring home a run and take a 1-0 lead.

Morningside extended the gap in the second inning with three hits and two Midland errors, scoring four runs to make it 5-0.

The Mustangs added to their lead with a two-run homer to left field in the third inning to push the score to 7-0.

Dax Wandler got the Warriors on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 7-1.

Morningside continued to strike in the fifth inning, recording five hits and capitalizing on three Midland errors to plate seven runs and extend the lead to 14-1.

The Mustangs tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer, to make it 18-1.

Anthony Martinez and Hunter Spencer drew back-to-back walks to open the seventh inning. A two-out single by Brody Boyle brought both runners home to make it 18-3. Morningside recorded the final out to secure the win in the series opener.

GAME TWO: Morningside 7, Midland 5

After three scoreless innings, Morningside struck first in the top of the fourth inning with three consecutive singles, followed by a sacrifice fly and a throwing error to take a 2-0 lead.

A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, followed by a two-run homer in the fifth, extended the Mustangs’ lead to 5-0.

Hunter Spencer sparked the Warriors’ offense in the top of the seventh with a one-out walk. Chase Bouges followed with a single down the left-field line, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Aidan Smith then delivered a three-run homer to center field to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Jax Sorensen kept the rally going with a walk before Brody Boyle launched a two-run homer to center field to tie the game at 5-5.

Morningside regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with two doubles and two passed balls to score two runs and make it 7-5.

The Mustangs held the Warriors scoreless in the ninth inning to secure the sweep.

Midland (11-18, 6-4 GPAC) will wrap up the four-game series at home against Morningside (20-11, 8-2 GPAC) on Sunday, March 29. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two to follow at Historic Moller Field.
