City hosting open house for Safe Streets 4 Fremont action plan

city-of-fremont-2

The City of Fremont, is hosting an open house to present the Safe Streets 4 Fremont a Safe Streets and Roads For All (SS4A) Safety Action Plan.

The event is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on March 30 in the Keene Memorial Library Community Meeting Room, 1030 N. Broad St. A formal presentation is planned for 5:30 p.m. City officials invite all members of the community to participate in the meeting.

The City received federal grant dollars to pursue this SS4A Safety Action Plan. The plan is the City’s first step in
its work to eliminate fatal crashes and dramatically reduce serious injury crashes within Fremont. Safe Streets 4 Fremont Safety Action Plan focuses on safety improvements holistically for all users of Fremont’s highway, street, sidewalk, and trail transportation network.

At the open house meeting, attendees will be able to review the planning process, final safety improvement projects the planning team is recommending, and provide feedback on these projects and implementation. City staff will be on hand to answer questions and record feedback.

The final recommended safety improvement projects were developed based on community input throughout the planning process and review of killed or seriously injured crashes within the City of Fremont. Input was collected from the community at large through pop-up events and online surveys that helped inform the plan.

A key component of this project is ensuring that transportation safety improvements benefit all users by addressing how fatal and severe crashes disproportionately limit mobility, access, and opportunity for historically disadvantaged populations, including non-English speakers, low- to moderate-income households, older adults, children, and people with disabilities.

The U.S. Department of Transportation established the Safe Street and Roads for All discretionary program in
2022 with $5 billion appropriated over the course of five years. The City of Fremont successfully obtained SS4A
grant dollars in late 2024 and officially kicked off the project in summer 2025 with its first Advisory Team
meeting.

The Advisory Team is made up of representatives from Fremont Public Schools, Fremont Police
Department, Heartland Workers Center, Fremont Beef Company, FEVR Rail to Trail Foundation, and the City of
Fremont.
