DCSO patrol unit struck while responding to accident

At about 1:50 p.m. Sunday, the Fremont/Dodge County Communications Center received reports of a crash on Highway 275 east of Luther Road, about a mile northeast of the city.

Deputies responded to the scene and located two vehicles in the center median. At the time deputies arrived, it was white out conditions with blowing snow. As deputies were initially assessing the scene, a Dodge pickup struck a mini-van. An additional vehicle then struck the back of a Dodge County patrol unit.

As deputies were checking on injured parties, the situation continued to escalate. Several crashes involving passenger cars, trucks, and semi trucks then occurred. In total, there were approximately 15 to 20 vehicles that had sustained damage and several other vehicles in the median and ditch of Highway 275.

There were minor injuries reported. Thankfully, no serious injuries were sustained from any of the collisions.

The Fremont Police Department, Nebraska Game and Parks, Nebraska State Patrol, as well as Fremont Fire & Rescue all responded to the scene along with Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Highway 275 was closed for about three hours while first responders cleared the wreckage. The visibility of the roadway and additional crashes made the scene unsafe for occupants and first responders.

The DCSO would like to thank the 911 Communications Center, law enforcement, fire, rescue, tow operators, and Department of Transportation who responded to the crashes. The teamwork that it took to re-open the highway did not go unnoticed.
