Warriors Take Game One, Fall in Extras to Split With Vikings

FREMONT, Neb. — Midland University wrapped up its four-game series against Grand View University with a doubleheader Monday afternoon. The Warriors started strong with a win in game one but fell in extra innings in game two to split the series.

GAME ONE: Midland 3, Grand View 0

After a quiet first inning, Owen Glover got the Warriors started with a single to left field. He advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third on a passed ball to put himself in scoring position. Adam Muniz Jr. then brought Glover home with a single to left field as Midland took a 1-0 lead.

After two scoreless innings from both teams, Hunter Spencer sparked the offense with a one-out double down the left-field line. Brody Boyle followed with a double to right-center field to score Spencer. Dax Wandler added a single to right field to bring home Boyle as Midland extended its lead to 3-0 at the end of the fifth inning.

Cole Hupke came in for relief in the seventh inning and shut the Vikings down to earn the save. He pitched 1.0 inning, allowing only one hit and striking out two.

Midland secured the 3-0 shutout victory over Grand View.

Matthew Arrey picked up the win with 5.0 innings pitched and four strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Grand View 9, Midland 4 (10 innings)

After four quiet innings from both teams, Dax Wandler got the Warriors started with a single, followed by a stolen base and a groundout to advance him to third. On a wild pitch, Wandler scored to put Midland on the board 1-0 at the end of the fourth inning.

Grand View answered in the fifth inning with three consecutive singles to drive in two runs and take the lead.

The Vikings extended the lead with a two-run home run to push the score to 4-1 at the end of the sixth inning.

Adam Muniz Jr. got the momentum rolling in the seventh with a single to right-center field as Chase Bouges entered as a courtesy runner. Jax Sorensen was hit by a pitch to move Bouges to second.

With two outs, Brody Boyle singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error, allowing Sorensen and Bouges to score and cut the deficit to one run at 4-3. Wandler followed with a single, and an error allowed another run to score, tying the game at 4-4.

Eimir Perez Jr. drew a walk and stole second before Ladon Getreu also walked to load the bases, but the Vikings recorded the final out to send the game into extra innings.

After scoreless eighth and ninth innings, Grand View broke the game open in the 10th with five runs on two hits and three Midland errors to take a 9-4 lead.

Hunter Spencer drew a walk in the bottom of the inning, and Wandler singled to put two runners on, but the Vikings closed the game to hand Midland the loss after a hard fought battle.

Midland (5-13) will begin conference play this weekend as it hosts Dordt University in a four-game Great Plains Athletic Conference series beginning Friday, March 13. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
