FREMONT, Neb. — Midland University was back in action Wednesday evening at the Wikert Event Center, falling 76-37 to Mount Marty in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play.
Mount Marty opened the game on an 8-0 run before jumpers by Zoey Sims and Skylar Indracut into the deficit. The Lancers answered with a three-pointer, prompting a Midland timeout. After the break, the Warriors’ offense stalled as Mount Marty closed the first quarter on a 17-1 run.
The teams traded baskets and free throws early in the second quarter before a layup by Alexus Motley pushed the Lancers’ lead to 30 with six minutes left in the half. Both offenses stalled for the next minute and a half before layups by Carla Cencerrero Gal and Allie Hakimzadeh sparked a brief Midland run. Mount Marty maintained control, however, and the Warriors trailed 48-19 at halftime.
Following intermission, Mount Marty opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 52-19 before the game shifted into a defensive battle. A free throw and a three-pointer by Jenna Weber ended Midland’s drought, but the Lancers quickly responded with a layup, leading to another Warrior timeout. After the break, Tyra Berry knocked down a three-pointer, but Mount Marty answered with seven straight points. Weber closed the quarter with three free throws to end a 3-0 Midland run.
The teams again traded baskets to begin the fourth quarter, but a 6-0 Mount Marty run stretched the lead to 73-35 with just over four minutes remaining. Offense slowed on both sides down the stretch, with just five total points scored to close the game.
Weber led the Warriors with 15 points. Sims added seven points and a team-high five rebounds.
Midland shot 12-for-55 (21.8%) from the field, while Mount Marty finished 29-for-71 (40.8%). The Lancers outrebounded the Warriors 55-36.
