Midland Earns First Conference Win With Shutout Over Waldorf

FOREST CITY, Iowa – Midland University took a long trip to Forest City, Iowa, to face Waldorf University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference match on Saturday evening. The Warriors earned their first conference win of the season, snapping a 10-game losing streak.

Midland got an opportunity for a penalty kick early on as Waldorf fouled in the box. Addison Castellanos took the kick and found the right corner of the net to send it past the keeper, putting Midland on the board 1-0 in the ninth minute. Waldorf was able to hold Midland off for the remainder of the first half, as the Warriors led 19-1 in shot attempts and 9-0 on frame through 45 minutes.

After the intermission, Castellanos found the back of the net again with a 20-yard free kick following another Waldorf foul early in the second half, extending Midland’s lead to 2-0 in the 47th minute. The Warriors added the final goal in the 81st minute as Cecily Barcenasassisted AnneMarie Oilepo, who found the back left corner of the net to seal a 3-0 win.

Goalkeeper Ava Brandt played the full 90 minutes, recording two saves on the night.

Midland outshot Waldorf 31-3, including 14-2 on goal.

Midland (2-11-1) will travel to Bellevue, Nebraska, to face Bellevue University (10-2-2) in a nonconference match on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
