The Three Rivers Public Health Department (3RPHD) has announced that, for the first time, eligible residents can now receive Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) vouchers directly through the department. This expansion increases access to fresh, locally grown foods while promoting healthy eating and supporting area farmers.
While this program has been available statewide for several years, this marks the first time the Three Rivers Public Health Department has been able to offer vouchers locally through its own offices. The program helps older adults access fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables while supporting Nebraska’s farmers and local food systems.
Through the SFMNP, income-eligible adults age 60 and older can receive one set of $48 vouchers per household, once per year, to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey at participating farmers’ markets. All vouchers must be used by October 31.
“This is a big step forward for our communities,” Executive Director of the Three Rivers Public Health Department Terra Uhing said. “While the program has been offered within our counties in previous years, this is the first time we’ve been able to provide vouchers directly through the health department. It’s a tremendous opportunity to make healthy eating more accessible, strengthen local agriculture, and improve overall community well-being.”
