FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University continued its nonconference schedule Wednesday with a 3-0 win over York University at Heedum Field. The Warriors dominated possession, outshooting the Panthers 19-4 and allowing only one shot on goal.
“We needed to have a match where we could control the game,” Head Coach Josh Nakayama said. “I believe we did that.”
Midland opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Hugo Garcia-Rosado Duran beat his defender on the right side and sent a cross into the box. Marco Reyes Ruiz met it and guided the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Garcia struck again in the 36th minute, delivering another cross into the box. This time, it found Augustin Ulzurrun, who powered a shot past the keeper for a 2-0 advantage at halftime. Midland outshot York 12-1 in the first half.
Garcia added to his strong night five minutes into the second half. After a shot by Iven Eckardt was saved, the rebound fell to Garcia, who finished for his fifth goal of the season and a 3-0 Warrior lead in the 50th minute.
York managed a couple of attempts late, but none troubled Midland goalkeeper Tomas Reyes, who made one save in 90 minutes. Garcia finished with two assists and a goal, while the Warrior defense kept the Panthers in check throughout.
“I’m putting high standards on this team, and there is a lot to improve on, but I’m proud of them,” Nakayama said.
Midland (4-1-0) returns to action next Wednesday, Sept. 10, on the road against Columbia College (2-1-0) in Columbia, Missouri. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
