Fremont DU receives $1.9 million grant for grid resiliency

The Fremont Department of Utilities (DU) has announced its successful application for the Nebraska Grid Resiliency Grant Program, which is funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The DU has been awarded $1,914,455 by the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment to elevate the electric grid resiliency.

In early 2024, the DU distribution team was invited to submit a full grant application after successfully completing a pre-application round. The DU submitted their application in June of 2024, outlining their project to relocate the 69kV transmission line from Substation G to Substation B. Currently, the 69kV circuits running from Substation A and Substation G to Substation B are situated on the same utility poles. The project will physically separate the two lines and therefore will improve grid reliability and streamline maintenance.

The transmission line relocation is part of DU’s broader Capital Improvement Plan and is set to make a substantial impact on the resilience of Fremont’s electrical infrastructure. In alignment with grant requirements, DU will provide a minimum match of $925,447.55. With anticipated project costs just under $5,000,000, DU’s total investment toward the project’s completion is estimated to be $3,072,307.

“This grant represents a significant step forward in our commitment to ensuring a reliable and resilient electric grid for our community,” said Jeff Shanahan, utilities general manager. “We are excited to tackle this project which supports reliability and a sustainable future for our ratepayers.”
