FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University took the court on Saturday night for another Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup inside the Wikert Event Center, facing off against No. 16-ranked Dakota Wesleyan University. The Tigers showcased why they boast the top-ranked defense in the conference, as the Warriors struggled to find consistent scoring. In the end, Dakota Wesleyan’s defensive prowess proved too much to overcome, as Midland fell 69-36.

The Tigers’ defense set the tone early, holding the Warriors scoreless for the first four minutes while jumping out to an 8-0 lead. Grace Holm knocked down a three-pointer to get Midland on the board, but the Warriors managed just two more points for the remainder of the quarter, trailing 18-5 heading into the second.

Midland found some offensive rhythm midway through the second quarter. A three-pointer from Jenna Weber and a pair of baskets by Ellie Bovaird trimmed the deficit to 13. Another Bovaird jumper, followed by back-to-back baskets from Sarah Shepard and Erin Foxhall, brought the Warriors within 11. However, the Tigers responded with a quick three points of their own to take a 32-18 lead into halftime.

Dakota Wesleyan extended its lead early in the third quarter, scoring the first four points before another Holm three-pointer halted the surge. The Warriors added two more baskets, but the Tigers’ defense tightened once again, holding Midland without a field goal for another four-minute stretch. During that span, Dakota Wesleyan capitalized with a 9-0 run, stretching its lead to 56-29 entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Shepard converted a layup, and Holm connected on another three-pointer, but Midland’s offensive struggles persisted. The Warriors managed just two more points the rest of the way, ultimately falling 69-36.

Midland shot 29.8% from the field (14-of-47) and 27.8% from three-point range (5-of-18). Dakota Wesleyan finished 27-of-66 (40.9%) overall and 4-of-13 (30.8%) from beyond the arc. Turnovers played a key role, as Midland’s 18 giveaways led to 18 points for the Tigers, while Dakota Wesleyan committed just nine turnovers without surrendering a single point off them.

Midland (3-20, 3-14 GPAC) will look to bounce back next Saturday when it travels to Sioux Center, Iowa, for a rematch against No. 1-ranked Dordt (22-1, 16-1 GPAC). The Warriors will aim for a better outcome after falling to the Defenders 82-48 earlier this season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. on February 8 inside DeWitt Gymnasium.
