A Fremont man died following a three-vehicle accident Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 30/275 and North Luther Road, just northeast of the city.
Leonard Nielsen, 80, was southbound on Luther when his vehicle collided with an eastbound vehicle on U.S. Highway 30/275.
Dodge County deputies responded to the accident that occurred at about 4:20 p.m. The initial investigation indicated that a red GMC pickup was southbound on Luther when the driver crossed over Highway 275.
An eastbound Ford Mustang collided with the passenger side of the pickup. The pickup then came to rest in the south ditch of Highway 275, and the Mustang spun in the intersection, striking a stopped white GMC Yukon on Luther.
The driver and lone occupant of the GMC pickup was not wearing a seatbelt, and the vehicle was not equipped with airbags. The Mustang’s lone occupant was wearing his seatbelt and airbags did deploy.
Nielsen was transported to Methodist Fremont Health where he passed away due to his injuries. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the accident.
DCSO was assisted by the Fremont Fire Department, the Fremont Rural Fire Department, the Fremont Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, as well as several good Samaritans who stopped to render aid.
